Comics Conclave 3.0

Coordinators: Argha Manna & Jaison Manjaly

IIT Gandhinagar's Comics Conclave was established three years ago with the goal of bridging the gap between scholarly inquiry and creative expression. In its second edition, the conclave expanded its scope to explore the comics medium from diverse perspectives. This platform brings together academicians, comics journalists, artists, writers, editors, and students from various disciplines to foster open dialogue and creative exchange.

As the world faces pressing challenges - culturally, socially, economically, and environmentally; the third edition of the Comics Conclave seeks to engage with these crises. Comics Conclave 3.0 will spotlight critical issues such as environmental and social justice through comics, the role of comics in vernacular languages, and the use of art as a pedagogical tool for children. By addressing these themes, the conclave aims to amplify marginalized voices and give voice to the voiceless!

poster.jpeg

FIRST TIME IN INDIA

Art Spiegelman: Disaster is my Muse is an insightful documentary made in 2024 that delves into the life and work of Art Spiegelman, the legendary cartoonist who revolutionized comics by exploring dark, complex themes. Shaped by his Holocaust-survivor parents and inspired by MAD magazine’s irreverent satire, Spiegelman’s most famous work, MAUS, is a poignant Holocaust narrative that redefined the medium. Spiegelman won the Pulitzer Prize in 1992 for MAUS. The film showcases his resistance to fascism, from Nazis to Trump, and features rich illustrations from his comics, highlighting his significant impact as an artist and cultural critic. This film is directed by Molly Bernstein and Philip Dolin.

Spiegelman and his work are more important than ever in the current era of growing neo-fascism and hegemonic powers. At IIT Gandhinagar's Comics Conclave 3.0, Art Spiegelman: Disaster is my Muse will be shown for the first time in India!
